Commander Wood
James Wood entered the Royal Navy in 1825 as a maritime surveyor. He surveyed places such as Africa, Morocco, and the Canary Isles. He also surveyed the North Sea, including Wales and Southern England in 1837. He was soon appointed in command of the Pandora, upon which he assisted in charting Esquimalt and the British Columbian coast in response to the Oregon boundary dispute with the United States. On his return to England, he was promoted to Commander. In 1855 he was put in charge of surveying the northwest coast of Scotland. The climate there affected his health, given acclimatisation to more tropical conditions, and he died relatively young on 12 April 1860.
