McArthur

Though it is not entirely clear that the “McArthur” mentioned in the Journal is indeed Lieutenant McArthur, the latter was in the vicinity of Fort Victoria during the period when this person was recorded.

The Lieutenant was in command of the American schooner Ewing, and was surveying the Columbia River bar and harbour during the spring and summer of 1849 (maps from 1850 have been published online). At one point, he took charge of the Albion which had been seized by the Americans, bringing her to the Columbia harbour.
