Charles Deroche was born in Quebec in 1819. He entered the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1840 and served at Fort Vancouver where he was married in 1842. He was transferred to Fort Victoria in April of 1848 where, though officially described as a labourer he was frequently engaged in tasks requiring carpentry skills. It's not clear whether his wife and children accompanied him during his two year stint at Fort Victoria. He returned to Fort Vancouver in 1850 where he was engaged until 1854.
